SPORTS MANAGEMENT ENCOMPASSES BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, VENUE MANAGEMENT, ADMINISTERING SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS AND FEDERATIONS, DEVELOPING CONTENT, EVENT MANAGEMENT AND DATA ANALYTICS

The year 2008 was a watershed one for Indian sport. Abhinav Bindra’s gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, the first won by an Indian in an individual event, triggered a revolution of sorts. More than a decade after that landmark moment, Indian athletes have made it a habit of excelling in global sporting events. No longer is India a one-sport nation.

The year 2008 also saw the birth of the Indian Premier League, whose success inspired a slew of leagues in other sports. There has never been a better time to be involved in Indian sports, either on or off the field.

The rapidly evolving sports industry needs professionals to facilitate its growth and development. This means demand for qualified individuals who will complement the results produced by the athletes on the field, with their enterprise and expertise off it.

The vision document brought out by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in 2014 comprised extraordinary projections regarding the demand for human resources in India’s growing sporting industry.

The demand for professionals in activities and ventures pertaining to sports development, sports facilities and sports event management is expected to rise by 9 percent, 8 percent and 8 percent respectively, by 2022, stated the report by FICCI.

Exceeding this will be the demand for sports management professionals, which was estimated to grow by 19% from 2014 to 2022.

Ever fancied running the day-to-day administration of a sporting facility like an indoor stadium yourself? Or being part of a group that handles the operations of, say, a pro-kabaddi league team? As someone who works at the grassroot level to identify and nurture sporting talent? As a member of the media and communications outfit of an IPL team? Someone who functions as a bridge between a sporting stalwart and brands?

The International Institute of Sports & Management (IISM), a pioneer of sports management education in India, is in its tenth year. Established by Nilesh Kulkarni, a former India Test cricketer, in Mumbai in April 2010, IISM has educated more than 800 professionals.

Sports management encompasses business development, operations, venue management, administration of sporting associations and federations, content development, event management, and data analytics, among other areas.

International Institute of Sports Management educates its students to pursue careers in these areas, based on their aptitude.

The International Institute of Sports & Management offers Bachelors and Masters degrees in sports management in collaboration with University of Mumbai, and an 11-month autonomous PGP in sports and wellness management.

Most of IISM’s faculty are masters from within the sports industry. In addition to classroom sessions and assignments, International Institute of Sports Management provides students with volunteering and internship opportunities in multiple sporting events.

As many as 80 IISM students worked in 16 different departments, from operations to player management to venue management, on the Khelo India Youth Games 2019, held in Pune and Mumbai in January.

Several students interned for different companies during the Indian Premier League 2019.

IISM has also initiated and launched India’s first dedicated Sports Academia Research Journal (SARJ). SARJ is an international research journal which will provide a platform for an association between sport and academic research in the industry. The International Institute of Sports Management’s (IISM) students have produced individual as well as joint research reports in collaboration with industry leaders like Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The International Institute of Sports Management has also received numerous awards, including the honours for best sports management educational institute by ASSOCHAM’s (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) Sports Business Summit and Awards, 2019 and outstanding sports management institute by World Education Summit during 2018.

International Institute of Sports Management’s students have been associated with organisations like IMG, Olympic Gold Quest, Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, CEAT, the Andhra Cricket Association, and the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence, to name just a few, as either full-time employees or interns.

The institution is committed to its objective of nurturing, moulding and supporting sports management professionals, who will serve and shape the sports industry in the years to come.
