Hima Das Creates History!
Women in India have been struggling to break through in different wakes of life and more so in sports with a conservative approach to their participation and involvement from a very young age! But, it’s refreshing to have an 18-year-old defy all odds and give India a sensational world record at the 400m IAAF World U-20 meet securing the country’s first ever gold medal at a world track event. Hima Das- the name to be marked in the history of sports, clinched gold after finishing the race at the top clocking 51.46 seconds.
This young girl from Assam is an inspiration both on and off the field, she took the initiative in demolishing country liquor vends in her village in Dihang and nearby areas.
Hima finished sixth earlier this year at the finals of the Gold Coast Common Wealth games, surprisingly clocking a better timing of 51.32 seconds than one that clinched her the gold at U-20 meet. Her personal best is 51.13 seconds which came at the Inter State Championship at Guwahati this June.
She is the part of the 4*400 meters relay national team and has participated and achieved podium finishes in other track events like 100 m, 200 m and 400m at various national and international competitions.
There’s no enough way to applaud for this magical girl, who left everyone right from Prime Minister, Shri.Narendra Modi to eminent sporting legends, speechless & astounded after her historic feat. This is the first time an Indian athlete has clinched the gold medal at any world track event.
Hima’s gold is a brilliant achievement for Indian Athletics and will give youngsters a new impetus to follow her path and achieve their dream prospect of becoming an athlete or getting into the sporting industry.
Here’s congratulating Hima on her extraordinary achievement and hoping for a lot more stories to be weaved in the near future for Indian sports. We are on the path of becoming a sporting superpower and young athletes like Hima concretise it further.
